Survey of 8000 Australians Reveals Top Choice in Dash Cam Technology
In a recent comprehensive study spearheaded by Schmicko, Australia’s premier car care company specialising in car dash cam installations, Australia’s motorists have voiced their preferences, making their top choices crystal clear when it comes to dash cameras.
At Schmicko, we have diligently collected and analysed information about dash cam makes, dash camera types, and vehicle types from a diverse range of 8000 participants across 2023 to 2024. Today, we are thrilled to share our findings in this comprehensive report titled “The Most Popular Dash Cameras of Australia in 2024“. We delve into the world of dash cameras, providing a unique insight into the brands, models, and features motorists across the Australian continent are favouring for their vehicles this year.
Where to start?
If you are considering having your car professionally fitted with a dashcam, this would be a useful read to help you get started. It is easy to get tangled in all the jargon and let’s face it, there seems to be a new brand coming out every month. With all that being said, the numbers and facts do not lie and to our surprise some interesting facts/figures beyond our expectation that will come in handy when you are making the important decision.
Dash Camera Type: Single, Dual or 3 Channel Dashcams?
Dash cameras come in varying types based on the number of channels they accommodate and can be installed into any vehicle whether it is a Hatchback or SUV. It really boils down to the owner’s preference: the more channels, the more coverage under your surveillance.
Single-channel dash cameras, the simplest type and also known as a Front Dashcam, consist of a single camera that records traffic scenes in front of the vehicle. Of the 8000 respondents, just over 9% were opting for this type of dash cam. These are ideal for basic usage, providing evidence in case of road accidents that occur from the front of the car and as you could expect, the cheapest of the 3 types of dash cams.
Dual-channel dash cameras are an upgrade, equipped with both front-facing and rear-facing cameras, capturing comprehensive details of incidents occurring at both ends of the vehicle. This type adds a layer of protection against rear-end collisions and fraudulent claims. After all, rear-end collisions do happen to account for a large portion of car accidents in Australia every year. It is no surprise that over 76% of respondents possessed or were planning to purchase a 2-Channel dash camera. It is by far the most common type of dashcam and a trend that we see fit, given that it should be the golden standard.
Finally, the advanced 3-channel dash cameras simultaneously record videos from three separate angles – front, interior, and rear views. This type accounted for over 14% of respondents, and we have noticed that this was increasingly preferred by cab and ride-hailing services as it records driver behaviour while capturing activities inside and outside the car.
The Most Popular Dash Cam Brand Voted By 8000 Aussies
Based on our comprehensive survey results from 8,000 respondents, we were intrigued to discover that nearly half, precisely 48%, overwhelmingly possessed or were about to purchase a dashcam from BlackVue, positioning it as a clear leader among dashcam brands. This endorsement of BlackVue’s high-performance and feature-rich models doesn’t come as a surprise, given its sustained customer trust and market reputation, but we were not expecting this large of a lead.
Furthermore, we observed that Viofo emerged as the second most favoured brand, grabbing nearly 13% approval from our respondents. Its impressive value across its entire product range certainly contributes towards making it a worthy contender in the dashcam market.
As for the remaining brands – Uniden, RedTiger, Navman, Garmin and Thinkware, they displayed a fairly balanced share of preference among the respondents, who are among the top brands in this industry. These brands have distinguished themselves with their unique offerings catering to diverse user needs, and it is refreshing to note such a variety.
Popular Vehicle Types For Dash Cam Installations
The analysis of our graph reveals a fascinating trend regarding the preferences of vehicle owners who have installed dash cams. The majority, nearly 53%, were SUV owners, underscoring the significance of security-conscious investments among this demographic. Likely made up largely of young families and parents, these individuals tend to prioritise safety as a non-negotiable aspect, aligning with our anticipated results. On the other hand, hatchback owners constituted 24%, followed by sedan owners at 18%. Unexpectedly, ute owners accounted for less than 4% of the total percentage, a figure that deviates from our predictions. This was surprising given that utes—whether single or dual cab—are frequently equipped with added accessories and tools which make them prone to break-ins and theft. Consequently, we forecast a greater demand for dash cams among this group. This particular discrepancy affirms the complexity inherent in predicting such behavioural patterns and the need for further investigation into those disparities.
The Expert’s Take
As experts in the car care industry, our dashcam professionals will of course always recommend the purchase of a dashcam irrespective of your car type, but it is interesting to see how very few utes do opt for this given their high-frequency use and often housing expensive tools and fittings. As you can determine from our findings, the majority align with our expectations that the 2 Channel, also known as front and rear dash camera, should be the bare minimum, and it is encouraging to see many of our respondents opt for this. As for the brands, although we do not have any affiliations with any of these manufacturers, we do agree with the trend and findings discovered here. We, too, believe these brand names do propose a reliable offering when it comes to dash cams and a great place to start your journey for hunting the ideal dash cam.
David Bui, CEO of Schmicko, expressed his enthusiasm about the findings. He stated, “We are thrilled to see such a strong preference for the BlackVue Model, with such a lead, although we are not surprised to see the other major brands come through in the top 5. This aligns perfectly with our mission to provide our customers with the best possible car care solutions as we are large advocates for some of these major brands given their quality and performance. The feedback from this survey will undoubtedly help us continue to deliver exceptional service and products.”
Schmicko’s dedication to excellence is further demonstrated by its comprehensive range of services, including detailing, maintenance, dash cam installations, paint protection, and tinting. By offering these services directly to customers’ doorsteps, Schmicko ensures a world-class car care experience that is both convenient and reliable.
